Al-fatihah to Yasmin Ahmad

"You may find this hard to believe, but I never ever think about festivals or awards while I'm writing a script or making a film. But given the flak I get back home sometimes, you cannot blame me for feeling at least a little vindicated when foreign festivals like Tokyo seek my permission to celebrate our films.

Allah is indeed great."
-Yasmin Ahmad-

how do you do it, kak yasmin? (may i call you that? hehe) how do you face all this adversity from your own people, and still make films? i never understood why they didn't appreciate you. sure, you don't fit into their comfort zone but isn't that the point? what i am amazed about is how you're still doing films and living in malaysia. if it was me, i'd either quit it altogether or move out where i am more appreciated.

so how DO you do it?

that's easy, atikah. i don't do it for them. i do it for allah, for my parents, for the people who DO like my films in whichever part of the world they may be, and i do it for me.

Kak Min, nak tanya. Jgn marah saya ye. Nak tanya aje. Masa Kak Min arahkan filem, berada di set - ada tak break utk solat? Kak Min solat tak? Dan galakkan anak-anak buah solat tak?

Saya wonder aje. Thanks Kak Min.

anuar, the answer to that is Yes. we do break for solat. and the reason for our solat break is not because we think we're good or anything, but because we need to seek allah's guidance and thank him for his blessings. we don't force others to solat with us -- they can see what we're doing, and that i think is enough of a reminder.

Kat malaysia ni kak min... minta maaf cakaplah...

"Kalau dah mati baru orang nak appreciate."

How's Datuk Yasmin Ahmad sound to you?
Probably nothing... Coz you probably dead by then!

"Pemergiannya merupakan satu kehilangan besar pada negara. Beliau telah membuka mata kita pada erti sebenar perfileman. Bagaimana seni, penceritaan dan aspek komersil boleh bergabung menjadi satu..."

Yeah... right...

I am a BN person.
But this is just so sick and too disturbing.
There is just too many "sudden death" happening in our detention.

I have always wondered what "sudden death" means?
When one dies suddenly like in a heart attack does it constitute sudden death? How about a car accident victim? Or a person who drops dead from a stroke?

Someone please explain sudden death to me.
And someone please explain what the hell is going on in this country.

Lastly condolences to the Teohs.
And let's hope the police does not classify this case as sudden dead as well.

Salaam and hi,

We all lost a great legend who brought together all the races in her work unassumingly. With her passing, movies and commercials will no longer have the impact or insightful messages that she managed to bring out effortlessly and tie them to our hearts. She was the only director who continuously reminded us what it used to be in Malaysia amongst all the races and made sure we remembered them always. She is also the only local director I consistently pay to see all her movies in the cinema - Sepet, Gubra, Mukshin, Talentimes because I know there is this side of her storytelling that is refreshing to watch and never been seen before. Her works are unique. We are just unfortunate to have not seen more. My condolences to her family and I hope her family will remember her the legend she was and nothing else. May her soul rest in peace. She will be missed.

P/S: Congatulations to Allahyarhamah Yasmin Ahmad and Talentime for winning Best Director Award, Best Screenplay Award, Best Supporting Actor Award, Most Promising Actress Award and Jury's Special Prize.

Regards.
